Bitter gourd: Improved varieties

To get a good crop of bitter gourd, it is necessary to select improved varieties. Different varieties of bitter gourd should be cultivated according to different regions and seasons.   • Arka Harit: Its fruits are of medium size. It is less bitter than other varieties. Seeds are also less in the fruits of this variety. It can be cultivated in summer and rainy season. 30 to 40 fruits can be obtained from each vine. The weight of the fruits of this variety is about 80 grams. The yield per acre of field is about 36 to 48 quintals.

  • Pusa Hybrid 1: It was developed in the year 1990. This variety is suitable for cultivation in the northern plains. Its fruits are green and shiny. It can be cultivated in spring, summer and rainy season. First harvesting can be done in 55 to 60 days. 80 quintal bitter gourd can be obtained per acre of land.

  • Pusa Hybrid 2: This variety was developed in the year 2002. It is suitable for cultivation in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Delhi. The color of the fruits of this variety is dark green. The length and thickness of the fruits are medium. The first harvesting can be done after 52 days. Each bitter gourd is about 85 to 90 grams. The yield per acre of farmland is 72 quintals.

  • Pusa Special: It can be cultivated from February to June in the plains of North India. Its fruits are thick and dark bright green in color. Its pulp is thick. The length of the plants is about 1.20 m. Each fruit weighs about 155 grams. Yields up to 60 quintals per acre of land.

  • Punjab Bitter gourd 1: Bitter gourd of this variety is long, thin and green in color. First harvesting can be done about 66 days after sowing. Each fruit is about 50 grams. About 50 quintals of bitter gourd can be obtained by cultivating per acre of land.
