How to control red banded caterpillar in mango?

Red banded caterpillars are the most damaging pests of mango fruits. The eggs of this insect can be seen on the fruit stalks. The larvae hatch from the eggs in about 7 to 12 days. Within 15 to 20 days, the larvae also pierce the seeds after eating the fruits. The adult insects live on the underside of the leaves during the day. Identification of Red Banded Caterpillar

  • The larvae are pale yellow in color with pink stripes.

  • As they grow, the larvae are shiny and turn dark red in color. There are also white stripes on the body.

  • The length of the insect is about 12 mm.

Symptoms of Red Banded Caterpillar Infestation

  • The larvae make holes in the fruit and eat the pulp inside.

  • Along with the fruits, these pests also pierce the mango kernels.

  • Black spots appear on the affected fruits.

  • Affected fruits drop prematurely.

How to Control Red Banded Caterpillar?

  • Cut and destroy the affected fruits (which show black spots).

  • Spray neem oil at an interval of 15 days for 2 months after the mango is visible.

  • Use of Lambda Cyhalothrin 5 EC proves beneficial. For this, mix 0.5 to 1 ml Syngenta Karate per liter of water and spray it.

  • Apart from this, the use of Deltamethrin 2.8 EC can also control this pest. For this, sprinkle 0.3 to 0.5 ml Bayer Decis 2.8 per liter of water.
