Major diseases of Moong crop

Mung bean crop is prone to many diseases. If this is not taken care of in time, then the crop may get ruined and farmers may have to face heavy losses.

• Powdery mildew disease: This disease caused by fungus called Erysiphi polygonae spreads rapidly in hot and dry environment. Due to this disease, white powdery spots appear on the leaves, stems and pods. To save the plants from this disease, sprinkle 1 gm Carbendazim or 3 gm Sulphex per liter of water.

• Yellow Chittery Disease: It is also known as Yellow Mosaic Disease. In the beginning of this disease, small yellow spots are formed on the leaves. As the disease progresses, the entire leaf turns yellow. This disease stops the growth of plants and also reduces the number of pods. To control this disease, spray 400 ml Dimethoate 30 EC per acre of land.

• Powdery mildew disease: It is one of the major diseases occurring in pulse crops. In this disease, a white powdery appearance starts on the upper surface of the leaves. As the disease progresses, the leaves start falling. Plants can be protected from this disease by spraying a solution of Sulphex 0.3 percent or Kerthane 2 percent.

• Leaf curl: In this disease the leaves turn upwards. Due to this the growth of plants stops and the plants start drying up. Make a solution by adding one gram of acephate or 2 ml of dimethoate per liter of water. This disease can be got rid of by spraying this solution.

• Black color disease: Reddish brown spots appear on the infected areas, which become darker with time. Infected plants should be destroyed to prevent the disease from progressing. Before sowing, per kg seed should be treated with 2 g Thiram or 1.5 g Bavistin.
