Papaya: Heterolysis disease in nursery

It is very important for the farmers cultivating papaya to be aware of the diseases that occur in the nursery. One of the diseases that occurs in nurseries is humidification disease. • Due to this disease, the stems of small plants start turning black.

• After some time the stems adjacent to the ground begin to rot.

• As the disease progresses, the plants wither and fall.

Control Methods

• Make proper drainage system in the nursery.

• The disease can be controlled by treating nursery soil before sowing.

• After treating the nursery soil with 2.5 percent solution of formaldehyde, cover it with polythene for 48 hours.

• While preparing the nursery, prepare the beds at a height of about 15 to 20 cm from the ground surface. There will be no problem of water logging.

• Before sowing treat seed with Carbendazim or Mancozeb@2gm/kg of seed.

• Apart from this, 2 grams of Ridomil per kilogram of seed can also be treated.

• To protect small plants from this disease in the nursery, sprinkle 2 grams of copper oxychloride or Mancozeb per liter of water.

• As per requirement 3 to 4 spraying can be done at an interval of 1 week.
