Some improved varieties of papaya and their characteristics

Some Improved Varieties of Papaya

• Red Lady 786: It is one of the hybrid varieties. The biggest feature of this variety is that male and female flowers are produced in the same plant. Because of this, fruits are obtained from every plant. Plants start bearing fruit only 9 months after planting. The storage capacity of fruits of this variety is high as compared to other varieties.

• Pusa Dwarf: Plants of this variety are short in height. Plants of this variety bear more fruit. Plants start bearing fruits from a height of about 25 to 30 cm above the ground surface. The fruits turn yellow after ripening. Each fruit weighs from 1 to 2 kg. Each plant yields 40 to 50 kg of fruits.

• Co 3: It is included in the hybrid varieties. This variety has been developed in the year 1983 at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. The fruits of this variety are delicious to eat. Each plant of this variety gives 90 to 120 fruits. Each fruit weighs 500 to 800 grams. After ripening, the fruits appear yellow to orange in color.

• Coorg Honey Dew: This variety is suitable for cultivation in South Indian regions. The fruits of this variety are long and oval. Fruit pulp is thick. Each plant yields up to 70 kg of fruits.

• Sunrise Solo: It is a high yielding hybrid variety. The pulp of the fruits of this variety is red to orange in color. The fruits are of medium size. The weight of each fruit is about 425 to 620 grams.
