Walnut: Know these things before farming

About 20 varieties of walnuts are cultivated in our country. It is most commonly used as a dry fruit. Apart from this, it is also used in sweets and many other dishes. Many types of beauty products are also prepared from it. Let us get detailed information on walnut cultivation.

In which areas of India are walnuts cultivated?

In our country it is extensively cultivated in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh.

Suitable time for walnut cultivation

  • The best time for transplanting walnut plants is from December to March.

Suitable soil and climate

  • Loamy soil is best for its cultivation.

  • Plants need a cool climate for growth.

  • Yields are adversely affected in hot climates.

Field preparation and planting

  • First of all plow the field well.

  • Add green manure as per requirement in the field at the time of sowing. This increases the amount of organic matter in the field.

  • Dung manure can also be used instead of green manure.

  • After that make the field level.

  • Now prepare a pit 1 meter long, 1 meter wide and 1 meter deep in the field.

  • Fill all the pits by mixing 50 grams of nitrogen, 40 grams of phosphate and 35 grams of potash in the soil.

  • Now transplant the cuttings of plants in these pits.

Irrigation and Weed Control

  • Give first irrigation after sowing of seeds.

  • Irrigation is not required when it rains.

  • Plants need more irrigation during the summer season.

  • Use drip irrigation to save water.

  • To control weeds, weeding is done as per requirement.

Fruit harvesting and production

  • The fruits are harvested between August and November.

  • The fruits are harvested after about 75 percent of the nut has been peeled from the shell.

  • 125 to 150 kg of walnuts can be obtained per tree.
