Castor Cultivation: Seed Rate, Seed Treatment and Sowing

In our country, castor is cultivated in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Odisha. It is mainly cultivated for oil extraction. Time of sowing

Castor is cultivated during the Rabi season as well as the rainy season.

If cultivation is to be done in the rainy season, then the month of July-August is best suited for its sowing.

For its cultivation in Rabi season, sowing should be done in the month of September-October.
Seed quantity

In irrigated areas, 2.4 to 3.2 kg of seed is required for cultivation per acre of land.

In unirrigated areas, 4 to 6 kg of seed is required per acre of land.
seed treatment

Soak the seeds in water for about 24 to 48 hours before sowing. This makes germination easier.

Treat seed per kg with 3 gm Thiram or Captan.

Apart from this, 2 grams of Carbendazim per kilogram of seed can also be treated.

After this the seed should also be treated with bacterial culture.
sowing

Sow the seeds in rows. Keep a distance of 60 cm between all the rows.

In unirrigated areas, sow the seeds at a distance of about 90 cm.

Whereas in irrigated areas, it should be sown at a distance of about 120 cm.
