Cowpea is one of the quick growing crops rich in nutrients like protein, phosphorus, calcium iron. It is cultivated mainly in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh. suitable time of sowing

Cowpea can be grown in summer season along with Kharif and Rabi.
For cultivation in Kharif, sow it in the month of June to July.
For Rabi cultivation, it is sown in the month of October to November.
In plains, cowpea can be cultivated from February to October.

Method of preparation and amount of fertilizer

Plow the field once deep.
After this, to make the soil friable, do light plowing for 2 to 3 times and apply pata.
At the time of last plowing, apply 12 kg nitrogen, 20 kg phosphorus and 16 kg potash per acre of field.
For good crop, add about 22 to 25 tonnes of compost per acre of land about 2 weeks before sowing.

Irrigation and Weed Control

Apply light irrigation after sowing. This makes germination easier.
Do not let the soil moisture decrease at the time of flowering and pod formation in plants.
Irrigate once a week in summer season.
Irrigate at an interval of 10 to 15 days in cold weather.
After sowing the seeds, it is necessary to control the weeds till flowering.
To control weed growth, sprinkle 750 ml Pendimethalin in 200 liters of water within 24 hours of sowing.

About 45 to 50 days after sowing, the pods begin to appear.
Not all beans are row together. Therefore, harvest the beans in 3-4 times.
After plucking the beans, dry them well in the sun and separate the grains.
