Essential information for Tulsi cultivation

Tulsi has many medicinal properties. Consuming basil leaves provides relief in diseases like cough, cold, fever etc. Many Ayurvedic medicines are prepared from it. Due to the increasing demand for Ayurvedic medicines, many big pharma companies are doing contract farming of Tulsi. What is the right amount of seed?

For cultivation per acre of land, 80 to 120 grams of seed is required.

When to sow seeds?

The month of April-May is most suitable for sowing the seeds.
Seeds begin to germinate in 1 to 2 weeks after sowing.

When to transplant plants?

Rainy season is best for plant growth.
Transplant the nursery prepared plants in the main field in the month of June-July.
Apart from this, seedlings can also be transplanted in the month of October-November.
Plant the plants in line. Keep a distance of 60 cm between all the lines.
Plant to plant distance should be 30 cm.

In what quantity should manure and fertilizers be used?

Tulsi has many medicinal properties. Avoid using chemical fertilizers and fertilizers to get high quality crop.
If fertilizers are needed, use organic fertilizers.
Apply 10 to 15 tonnes of well decomposed cow dung or 5 tonnes of compost per acre of field.
Manure and fertilizers should not be used in very hot weather and very cold weather.

When to irrigate?

Irrigate 2 to 3 times in 1 month during summer season.
Irrigation is not required when it rains.
Irrigate only when necessary in cold weather.
Stop irrigation work 10 days before harvesting of crops.

When to harvest Tulsi?

The first harvesting can be done 3 months after transplanting the plants.
If you are cultivating basil for oil extraction, then cut off the upper parts of the plants i.e. 25 to 30 cm from the top.
After flowering, the amount of oil in the plants decreases. So don't delay in harvesting.
