How to do Vanilla Cultivation?

In our country, Vanilla is cultivated in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, North Eastern regions as well as Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Being the second most expensive spice in the world, its cultivation can prove to be a profitable deal for the farmers. soil and climate

  • Select soil rich in organic matter for vanilla cultivation.

  • To avoid the problem of water logging in the field, make arrangements for proper drainage.

  • It can be cultivated in many types of soil.

  • Avoid cultivating in clay soil for good growth of plants.

  • Hot and humid climate is suitable for good yield.

  • Good crop can be obtained in about 25 to 30 degree centigrade temperature.

  • Loamy soil is considered good for its cultivation.

  • While preparing the field, first plow it 2 to 3 times.

  • It is considered good to have a slight slope in the land.

manures and fertilizers

  • The amount of manure and fertilizer depends on the nutrients present in the soil.

  • Usually 40 to 60 grams of nitrogen, 20 to 30 grams of phosphorus and 60 to 100 grams of potash are used per plant.

  • Apart from this, cow dung manure or vermi compost can also be added to the field.

  • This will complete the deficiency of organic matter in the soil and we will be able to get a better crop.

  • Vanilla plants can be planted both through cuttings and seeds.

  • Its grains are small in size, so seeds are used less for cultivation.

  • For planting its cuttings, prepare a pit in the field in advance and mix cow dung manure or vermi compost in it.

  • After this, plant cuttings of plants in all the pits.

  • Plant the cuttings at a distance of about 8 feet.

irrigation and harvesting

  • Irrigate according to soil moisture and requirement.

  • After flowering in plants, it takes about 6 to 9 months for the pods to ripen.

  • When the pods become light yellow in color, then it should be harvested.

  • The length of the pods is about 12 to 25 cm.
