In our country, Bihar accounts for 85 percent of the total production of Makhana in India.

Its cultivation was started in Purnia, Katihar and Araria districts of Bihar about a decade and a half ago.

Makhana is produced in large quantities in many villages of Darbhanga and Madhubani in Bihar.

Along with this, it is also cultivated in Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Purvanchal of Uttar Pradesh , Terai and Central UP.

Talking about foreign countries, Makhana is also cultivated in countries like China, Russia, Japan and Korea.
