Maize: Weed Management

Excess of weeds can reduce the production of maize by 30 to 40 percent. Broad-leaf weeds and narrow-leaf weeds are mainly found in maize crop. There are many weeds in maize crop in different regions of the country like Sawa, Doob, Narkul, Motha, Viper grass, Chawlai, Wild Jute, Makoi, Kunda grass, Hazardana, etc. See how to control them here.

  • To control weeds, weeding and hoeing must be done in the field at intervals of some time.

  • Weeding and hoeing should be done at least 2 to 3 times in the field.

  • Weeding should not be done deeper than 4-5 cm. Deeper than this can damage the roots of the maize.

  • If maize has been cultivated in light soil, then spraying of Atrazine 500 grams per acre of land can control various weeds.

  • On the other hand, if cultivation has been done in heavy soil, then to control weeds, spray 800 grams of Atrazine per acre of land in 200 liters of water.

  • At the time of application of weedicides, it is necessary to have sufficient amount of moisture in the soil.

  • Spraying of 400 liters of water with 2 to 2.5 liters of Alchlor 50 percent EC within 48 hours of sowing controls weeds.

  • To control weeds, spray 115 ml Lodis (Tambotreon 42% SC) per acre of land after 30-60 days of sowing.
