Rabi Maize: Field Preparation and Land Treatment

Maize is used to make many wonderful food items from roti to popcorn, cornflakes, baby corn, etc. Apart from this, about 65 percent of the total production of maize is used in the feed of maize chickens and other animals. If you want to cultivate maize in the Rabi season, then you can see the method of preparing the field from here. Along with this, you can also check the right amount of manure and fertilizers from here to get good yield and high quality crop.

Field preparation and amount of fertilizer

  • While preparing the field for sowing of maize, do 2 deep plowing. For deep plowing, reversing plow or disc harrow can be used.

  • After this, do light plowing 2 times with native plow or cultivator.

  • For good crop, mix 3 to 4 tonnes of well decomposed cow dung per acre of field.

  • Never use raw cow dung in the field. There is an increased risk of termite breeding in raw dung.

  • 48 kg of nitrogen, 24 kg of phosphorus and 16 kg of potash are required per acre of field.

  • Add half the amount of nitrogen i.e. 24 kg nitrogen and full amount of phosphorus and potash at the time of plowing the field.

  • Spray the remaining half of the nitrogen in the standing crop.

  • To make the soil of the field friable and level, it is necessary to apply pat after plowing.

  • For sowing the seeds, prepare the beds at a distance of 60 cm in the field.

  • Sow the seeds at a distance of 20 cm on all the beds.

  • Sow the seeds at a depth of 5 cm.
