To get healthy and high quality crop it is very important to treat the seed before transplanting. Seed treatment facilitates germination. How to choose healthy seeds?

  • The easiest way to select healthy seeds is to use salt water.

  • In this process, a solution is prepared by mixing 1 kg of salt in about 10 liters of water.

  • After this, put 15 kg of seeds in this prepared salt solution.

  • In this process healthy seeds go under water and unhealthy seeds float on the water being lighter.

  • Now you can easily isolate the unhealthy seeds.

  • Clean the remaining healthy seed thoroughly with water and keep it in a shady place.

How to treat seeds?

There are several processes involved in seed treatment. From here you can get information about different process of seed treatment.

  • Seed Dressing: Being the simplest process of seed treatment, this process is used the most. Seed dressing process involves treating the seed with a dry mixture or solution of drugs.

  • Seed Coating: In seed coating process a special binder is used to stick the drugs on the seed.

  • Seed Pelleting: In this process the seed handling is improved by changing the size of the seed. Seed pelleting requires special machines and techniques. This is the most expensive process of seed treatment. Due to the high cost, it is generally used less by the farmers.

What is the biological process of seed treatment?

Seed treatment can also be done by biological process to avoid the use of fungicides.

  • Treatment with Beejamrut: Bijamrut is used for biological treatment. In this process 50 grams of cow dung, 50 milliliters of cow urine, 50 milliliters of cow's milk and about 2 to 3 grams of lime are mixed in 1 liter of water and kept overnight. Seeds can be treated with this mixture the next morning.
