Sugarcane red rot disease and its prevention measures

More than 50 diseases are found in sugarcane crop. One of which is red rot ie red rot disease. Red rot disease is also called sugarcane cancer. To protect the sugarcane crop from this disease , it is very important to know the cause, symptoms and prevention measures of this disease.

cause of disease

  • The disease is caused by a fungus called Glomerella tucumensis. Which survives in the soil for a few months.

  • The main reason for red rot disease is the use of seeds affected by this disease.

  • Cold, wet weather, high soil moisture and continuous cultivation of the same crop are favorable for this disease.

symptom of disease

  • The third and fourth leaves of the plants affected by this disease turn yellow and dry up.

  • The spores of the fungus begin to develop on the knots and peels of sugarcane.

  • In canes affected by the disease, white colored spots are formed in the middle of red color.

  • The pulp of sugarcane is filled with red and brown mold.

  • The plants smell like alcohol when they dry.

preventive measures

  • There is no effective method available to control this disease.

  • Select disease free, healthy seeds. If a seed piece has redness on both sides of the eyes, do not use it for cultivation.

  • To avoid red rot disease, make a solution of 1 gram of Carbendazim or Mancozeb per liter of water. Treat the seeds with this solution.

  • This disease can also be avoided by treating the seed for 1 hour at 54 degree centigrade with a moist hot purification machine.

  • To control the spread of the disease, remove the affected plants from the field and spray 0.1% Carbendazim or Mancozeb.
