Wheat: Seed Rate, Interval and Sowing Methods

There are many things to keep in mind to get a good yield of wheat. In which the correct amount of seed, what should be the distance at the time of sowing and the method of sowing is also included. If you are not aware of these things then surely this post will be helpful for you. From here you can know the quantity of seeds, the interval for sowing the seeds and the method of sowing.

Seed quantity

  • For timely sowing in irrigated areas, about 40 kg of seed is required per acre of field.

  • If you are doing late sowing in irrigated areas, about 50 kg of seed will be required per acre of field.

  • If wheat is sown by spraying method, more quantity of seeds will be required.

  • For sowing by spraying method, 60 to 65 kg of seed is required per acre of field.

At what distance should you sow?

  • If you are sowing on time, then keep the distance from seed to seed at 20 to 22 cm.

  • For late sowing, the distance from seed to seed should be 15 to 18 cm.

  • Plants do not get proper amount of nutrients when sowing is done in close proximity. Due to which the yield decreases.

  • On the other hand, sowing at a greater distance gives more space for weeds to grow. Due to this also there is a decrease in yield.

sowing method

Wheat is sown in several ways. Sowing should be done by any method, but keep the depth of seed only about 4 to 5 cm. Sowing at a greater depth causes problems in germination, so avoid sowing at a deeper depth than this.

  • Sowing in rows: There is no need to build a bund in the field for sowing in rows. Keep a distance of 20 to 25 cm between all the rows. Keeping in mind the fixed distance and depth, sow 2 seeds each in a row. You can also sow through seed drill machine.

  • Sowing on Weir: For sowing with this method, after plowing, make a bund in the field. Sow in 2 or 3 rows on all the bunds. Sowing by this method saves up to 25% of seed. 30-32 kg seed is sufficient for per acre of field. With this, sowing by making a bund also helps in irrigation.

  • Zero tillage method: In this method the seeds are sown without plowing. Zero tillage machine is required for sowing. With this method, the buds come out more quickly, water is saved at the time of irrigation and the yield also increases.
