Cultivation of Lettuce

Lettuce is a cold-season crop grown in India. Its leaves are tender and juicy, commonly used in salads while fresh. The leaves are rich in minerals and vitamin A, making them a nutrient-dense food.

How to Cultivate Lettuce?

  • Soil: Lettuce thrives in well-drained sandy loam soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 6.8. While it tolerates slightly acidic soils, yields decrease in soils with a pH below 5 or above 7.
  • Climate: Lettuce is generally grown in cold climate with an ideal temperature range of 21-24°C for optimal growth. It grows well in hilly areas, but warm and humid conditions can spoil the crop, causing leaves to become bitter and plants to rot.
  • Sowing Time: The best time to sow lettuce is between September and November. Seeds are sown in nurseries, taking 3-4 days to germinate, and transplanted into fields after 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Varieties: Lettuce varieties are categorized by their appearance and texture. Head types include New York 515, Imperial 44, 152, 456, 615, 847, Cobham Green, etc. These have firm leaves used in salads and garnishing. Leaf types include Simpson, Prizehead, Punjab Lettuce No. 1, Great Lakes, and Alamo-1, known for their soft, large leaves used in salads and sandwiches.
  • Seed Rate: 160-200 grams of seeds are sufficient for 1 acre of lettuce cultivation.
  • Sowing Method: Leafy varieties are sown directly in fields from August to September. Some varieties are sown in nurseries between September and October and transplanted after 5-6 weeks. In hilly areas, sowing from February to June is suitable. For direct sowing, row spacing should be 45 cm, with plants spaced 30 cm apart. For transplanting, keep row spacing at 45 cm and plant spacing at 25-35 cm. Seeds should be sown at a depth of 2-4 cm.
  • Field Preparation: Lettuce has shallow roots, so deep tillage isn’t necessary. The first plowing should be done with a plow to break the deep soil layers. Two more rounds of tilling with a cultivator or harrow should follow. Level the soil after each tilling to retain moisture.
  • Fertilizer and Manure: For commercial farming, apply 40-60 quintals of organic manure per acre, along with 44 kg of urea, 78 kg of DAP, 60 kg of MOP, and 4 kg of Starter fertilizer. Spread organic manure evenly before field preparation. Mix the full amount of phosphorus and potash with half the nitrogen and apply it during the final tillage. The remaining nitrogen should be applied in two top-dressing stages—one a month after transplanting and the other 45-60 days later.
  • Irrigation Management: Pre-sowing irrigation is necessary. Light irrigation after transplanting helps plants establish well. Insufficient moisture can lead to bolting in the crop.
  • Harvesting: The harvesting method depends on the variety. Leafy varieties can be harvested in 50-60 days, while head varieties take 60-70 days.
  • Yield: Lettuce yield depends on soil fertility, variety, cultivation method, and care. Typically, 12-14 leaves are harvested per plant, with an average yield of 40-55 quintals per acre.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: When should lettuce be planted?

A: Spring and autumn are the most suitable times for lettuce cultivation. Generally, in India, lettuce is planted between February to April and September to November, as the weather and temperature during these periods are favorable for its growth. However, if you are growing lettuce in a controlled environment like a greenhouse, you can grow it year-round.

Q: Can we grow lettuce in India?

A: Yes, lettuce can be cultivated in India, but it depends on the climate of your region. In cold and semi-cold areas like North India and Western India, lettuce grows easily. In tropical regions with higher temperatures, it's better to grow lettuce in a greenhouse or under shade nets to maintain ideal temperature and humidity.

Q: What type of soil is best for growing lettuce?

A: Lettuce grows best in well-drained, fertile soil. Light soils like loamy or black soils are ideal for lettuce. The soil pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0. Proper drainage is important, as waterlogging can damage lettuce roots and lead to fungal diseases.

Q: Can I grow lettuce year-round?

A: In India, if the right conditions are maintained, you can grow lettuce year-round. In tropical regions, lettuce cultivation can be done in controlled environments like greenhouses or shade nets, where temperature and humidity are managed, helping to maintain lettuce's freshness and quality throughout the year.

Q: Where is lettuce grown in India?

A: Lettuce is primarily grown in cooler and temperate climate regions. It is mainly cultivated in northern states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir. Additionally, in some parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, lettuce is being successfully cultivated using greenhouse technology, where temperature and humidity are controlled.
