Cultivation of Lettuce
Lettuce is a cold-season crop grown in India. Its leaves are tender and juicy, commonly used in salads while fresh. The leaves are rich in minerals and vitamin A, making them a nutrient-dense food.
How to Cultivate Lettuce?
- Soil: Lettuce thrives in well-drained sandy loam soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 6.8. While it tolerates slightly acidic soils, yields decrease in soils with a pH below 5 or above 7.
- Climate: Lettuce is generally grown in cold climate with an ideal temperature range of 21-24°C for optimal growth. It grows well in hilly areas, but warm and humid conditions can spoil the crop, causing leaves to become bitter and plants to rot.
- Sowing Time: The best time to sow lettuce is between September and November. Seeds are sown in nurseries, taking 3-4 days to germinate, and transplanted into fields after 4 to 6 weeks.

In hilly areas, sowing from February to June is suitable. For direct sowing, row spacing should be 45 cm, with plants spaced 30 cm apart. For transplanting, keep row spacing at 45 cm and plant spacing at 25-35 cm. Seeds should be sown at a depth of 2-4 cm.
- Field Preparation: Lettuce has shallow roots, so deep tillage isn’t necessary. The first plowing should be done with a plow to break the deep soil layers. Two more rounds of tilling with a cultivator or harrow should follow. Level the soil after each tilling to retain moisture.
- Fertilizer and Manure: For commercial farming, apply 40-60 quintals of organic manure per acre, along with 44 kg of urea, 78 kg of DAP, 60 kg of MOP, and 4 kg of Starter fertilizer. Spread organic manure evenly before field preparation. Mix the full amount of phosphorus and potash with half the nitrogen and apply it during the final tillage. The remaining nitrogen should be applied in two top-dressing stages—one a month after transplanting and the other 45-60 days later.
- Irrigation Management: Pre-sowing irrigation is necessary. Light irrigation after transplanting helps plants establish well. Insufficient moisture can lead to bolting in the crop.
- Harvesting: The harvesting method depends on the variety. Leafy varieties can be harvested in 50-60 days, while head varieties take 60-70 days.
- Yield: Lettuce yield depends on soil fertility, variety, cultivation method, and care. Typically, 12-14 leaves are harvested per plant, with an average yield of 40-55 quintals per acre.
